Drivers who text behind the wheel risk not only a traffic crash but a $100 citation under provisions of a new Michigan law designed to keep drivers’ thumbs on the wheel and eyes on the road. The primary-enforcement law prohibits drivers from reading, manually typing or sending a text message while driving. Michigan is the 24th state to ban drivers from texting.
All distractions can endanger drivers’ safety, but texting is the most alarming because it involves all three types of distraction: visual, manual and cognitive.
• Visual — taking your eyes off the road
• Manual — taking your hands off the wheel
• Cognitive — taking your mind off what you’re doing
Keep your thumbs on the wheel.
